The engine (10) has two valve trains operatively connected with a cam shaft (12), and a crankshaft synchronized with another crankshaft by the cam shaft. A crank case (11) is designed as a reciprocating piston compressor that is flow-mechanically or operatively connected with cylinders of the engine. The cam shaft is operatively connected with an output of the engine. Two pistons comprise a movable combustion chamber wall of the cylinders of the engine and a movable compressor wall of the crank case. An overflow valve is arranged between the crank case and one of the cylinders of the engine. The overflow valve is designed as a laterally arranged poppet valve.
