The density profile 5 information determined includes a position of minimum density in the stem, log, cant or slab. This enables the prediction of a stiffness profile across the stem, log, cant or slab from the acoustic velocity and the density profile information across the stem, log, cant or slab. The stiffness profile and the position of minimum density in the stem, log, cant or slab can be used to generate a sawing pattern for cutting the stem, log, cant or slab.
