The device has a monitoring device (29) for monitoring whether an elevator car (8) is found within the predetermined tolerance level during its stopping. An actuator is provided for releasing a braking device for the elevator car, if the elevator car is not found within the predetermined tolerance level. An independent claim is also included for a device for controlling stopping position of an elevator car within a predetermined height tolerance relative to a floor level.
