Performance analysis of a hypothetical database

Method for performance analysis of a database includes: providing a proposed data model as supplied by a designer; generating a hypothetical query workload; generating hypothetical optimizer statistics; creating an empty database and a database schema using the proposed data model; applying the hypothetical optimizer statistics to the sample empty database; once hypothetical optimizer statistics are set, applying each query of the hypothetical query workload to the database; and estimating the cost of the hypothetical query workload for the proposed data model. The method preferably includes refining the proposed data model and iterating the estimate of the cost of the hypothetical query workload.
