The device has a chain guide (22) transporting a web-shaped material i.e. plastic film web, through a forming station (2) and an evacuating and sealing station. The guide is vertically moved relative to a tool insert (20) e.g. heating plate, by an actuator e.g. pneumatic cylinder, so that the insert is laterally displaced relative to a production direction. The guide is coupled to a sealing tool upper part or a sealing tool lower part during movement of the guide. The insert contacts with a tool carrier (21) i.e. cooling plate, of the forming station during operation of the forming station. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a tool changing device of a work station of a thermoform packaging machine.
