[Class 80 (ii)] [See also Groups XXXIV, XXV, and XXXV] In a gas or air lubricated bearing having relatively rotatable sliding surfaces 17, 17a of sufficiently large diameter to ensure the formation of the necessary air film, parallelism of the surfaces under all conditions is ensured by universally supporting at least one of these surfaces by cardan-like members having a high-rigidity in the radial direction to withstand radial loads. The spinning spindle 11, Fig. 1, carries a hollow pulley 16 the inside of which is spaced from a non-rotatable sleeve 22 universally mounted with respect to a stationary sleeve 18 by the air pressure generated solely by the rotation of the pulley. Similar air-lubricated bearing surfaces 17a are provided at the bottom of the spindle but in this case, the universally mounted sleeve 22a is rotatable with a sleeve 13 on the spindle. The cardan devices, Fig. 2, for the sleeves 22, 22a comprise an integral or laminated resilient ring 20 engaged by flanged pins 19, 21 engaging the sleeves 18, 22 respectively. A modified form of cardan device comprises a series of thin annular discs 30, Fig. 7, with projections 31, 32 spaced 90‹ apart which are clamped between rings 33 ..36, Fig. 6, held in place by screwed or force fitted rings 37, 38. The ring 38 has a projection 38a to limit the tilting of the sleeve 22. Projections on the outer and inner clamping rings 34, 35 extending more than half the thickness of the rings prevent their relative circumferential movement. A single disc 30 may however be used. The surfaces 17, 17a are formed of moisture-resisting material such as nickel or chromium steel, or the artificial resin known under the Registered Trade Mark " Bakelite," or the cellulose product known under the Registered Trade Mark " Cellon." The whirl of air between the conical parts 16b, 25b prevents the entry of dust &c. into the bearing. In a modified form of spinning spindle fitted with the universal mountings shown in Figs. 6 and 7, the sleeve 18 is integral with the bracket 25 which is secured to the housing 23 through an intermediate sleeve, and the pulley 16 is made in two parts.
