PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for simply and stably implementing a state with no anchoring in plane, and a liquid crystal display device using the state with no anchoring in plane, implemented by the method.SOLUTION: In a method of aligning liquid crystal having no anchoring in plane, for a liquid crystal cell where a substrate 1 flattened has a polymer brush 2 formed thereon and liquid crystal is held between the substrates, the liquid crystal cell is heated to a temperature that is higher than Tg of a coexisting portion 4 of the polymer brush 2 and the liquid crystal and allows the shape of the coexisting portion 4 to freely change. A liquid crystal display device includes the liquid crystal cell produced by the method of aligning liquid crystal having no anchoring in plane.
