Provided are an apparatus and a method for limiting overcurrent of a synchronous generator. An overcurrent limiting apparatus of the synchronous generator, which is controlled to follow a reference voltage, comprises: a reactive power calculator which calculates reactive power from an output current and an output voltage of the synchronous generator; a pulse-width modulation signal generator which generates a pulse-width modulation signal for adding to or subtracting from the reference voltage; a signal selector which selects a drop signal if the calculated reactive power is lagging, and which selects a rise signal if the calculated reactive power is leading; and a reference voltage adjustor which controls the overcurrent of the synchronous generator by increasing the reference voltage according to the generated pulse-width modulation signal if the rise signal is output, and decreasing the reference voltage according to the generated pulse-width modulation signal if the drop signal is output, wherein the pulse-width modulation signal generator includes a second pulse-width modulation signal generator which generates a pulse-width modulation signal based on a preset on-time and a preset off-time, thereby preventing the overcurrent flowing in the synchronous generator.
