System for managing revisions of documents comprising a central repository and a mobile device comprising: an optical scanner for scanning an identifier on a document; communication means to communicate the scanned identifier to the repository, and to receive a response comprising: a designation whether the scanned identifier is the latest revision of the document, or a revision identifier designating the latest revision of the document; reproduction means to reproduce the response received from the communication means; the repository further comprising: communication means to receive an identifier, and to send a designator designating whether the identifier represents the latest revision or a revision identifier designating the latest revision of the document; revision retrieval means to retrieve the latest revision of the document represented by the identifier, and to determine the designator or the revision identifier.
