Improvements in or relating to the manufacture of treatment of artificial filaments, threads, yarns, and like materials

The tension in artificial filaments, threads and yarns is maintained constant in processes in which the running materials are subjected to the action of softening agents, by controlling the conditions under which the materials are softened by the tension itself. For example, the filaments or the like may act directly on a dynamometer which in turn operates a relay, e.g., a photo-electrically controlled relay. The relay may cause a steam valve to open wider when steam is used as the softening agent, or may cause a pump to introduce additional and more concentrated softening agent into the bath when a solution of a softening agent, such as dioxane, is being used. In the Figure, the thread 1 enters the bath 2 and passes around the pulleys 7, 8, 9, of a dynamometer. A solution of dioxane is kept in circulation through the bath by means of a suitable pump and conduits 4, 5. The pulley 8 of the dynamometer operates a disc 11 which is movable in the path of a beam of infra red rays passing from the source 12 to the photo-electric cell 13. The cell controls an electric motor 15 connected to a pump supplying a solution of dioxane to the bath. This solution has a concentration of 3--8 per cent higher than that in the bath. In operation, an increase in tension in the thread causes the mechanism attached to the dynamometer to intercept the beam of infra red rays falling on the photo-electric cell, thereby causing the motor 15 to start up and pump more concentrated softening agent into the bath to counteract the increase in tension.
