Polyhydroxyphenols containing two nuclear-substituted secondary alkyl groups are prepared by heating the polyhydroxyphenol in the presence of fused zinc chloride with an aliphatic primary, secondary or tertiary alcohol for a sufficient length of time to p cause two alkyl groups to enter the nucleus; water is then added, the mass heated until two layers are formed and the viscous top layer distilled in vacuo. The products possess germicidal properties. Examples are given of the interaction of (1) pyrogallol with n-butyl, tert-butyl, tert-amyl, n-amyl, isoamyl, 1-methylbutyl, 2-methylbutyl, 1-ethylpropyl, n-hexyl, n-heptyl and n-octyl alcohols; (2) resorcinol with n-propyl, n-amyl, 1-methylbutyl, n-hexyl, n-heptyl and ethyl alcohols; and reference is made to the dihexyl derivatives of phloroglucinol and hydroquinone. In general, molecular parts of the phenol and alcohol are employed and one-and-a-half molecular parts of zinc chloride, but other proportions may be used. The products in each case contain two alkyl groups in the secondary form. Specifications 398,218, 415,715, 421,965, and 442,369 are referred to. |
