Cooling air channels (14) are formed within the turbine section (12) of a drive shaft (10) and between turbine disks (13) around the turbine section. Each of the cooling air channels radiates outward from a cavity (15) around the cooling air supply channel (16) within the drive shaft and is of an elliptical cross-section. The major and minor axes of each cooling air channel runs perpendicular and parallel to the drive shaft axis, respectively.
