摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a solid state image pickup device in which, even if excessive light enters, an electric charge does not overflow to a floating diffusion layer from a photoelectric conversion part to impair a signal in a different accumulation period which is held in the floating diffusion layer, and while the noise of accumulated signal read before resetting can be suppressed, a wide dynamic range is available with a reading circuit of a single column.SOLUTION: In a pixel array, a plurality of pixels are arranged in matrix, with each pixel including a photoelectric conversion element PD, a transfer transistor TX which transfers electric charge to a floating diffusion layer FD, a reset transistor RT, an amplification transistor SF, a selection transistor SL, and a discharge transistor BG. The pixel array is driven in order of rows, and electric charges are accumulated, being classified in two periods of different accumulation time of the photoelectric conversion element PD. Driving is controlled, when a short time accumulation charge is held in the floating diffusion layer FD, in such a manner as an off-time potential of the discharge transistor BG is deeper than the off-time potential of the transfer transistor TX.
