PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a portable information terminal that can reliably determine which hand is used by a user to hold the portable information terminal and can display an icon or the like at a position on the touch panel where the user can easily operate the terminal according to a user's posture and how the user holds the terminal.SOLUTION: A portable information terminal includes: user holding point detection means that detects a position of the portable information terminal held by a user's hand on the basis of results of detection by plural touch sensors disposed on a back surface of a body and at least one of side surfaces of the body; face recognition means that recognizes the direction of a user's face from an image taken by an inner camera; holding state estimation means that estimates a holding state including information about which hand is holding the portable information terminal from the detected position and the recognized face direction; and icon display position change means that determines the display position of an icon to be displayed on the touch panel on the basis of the estimated holding state so that the user can easily operate the terminal in the current holding state.
