PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a contact device capable of easily extinguishing an arc generated between a fixed contact and a movable contact when opened, and an electromagnetic switch using the contact device.SOLUTION: The contact device includes a pair of fixed contacts 6a and 6b fixed and arranged keeping a prescribed interval inside an arc extinguishing chamber, and a movable contact 11 disposed so as to be brought close to and separated from the pair of fixed contacts. On the movable contact 11, an arc foot movement acceleration part 12 is formed to accelerate the movement of the arc foot generated when opened to separate from the pair of fixed contacts.
