A console interface (210) of a console programmable computer provides a presentation control interface for directing visual content to a presentation display (220a, 220b) for viewing by a number of in-class participants (320). A camera (240) and a microphone (250) capture video data and audio date of a presenter (310) which is sent, along with the visual content, to one or more programmable computers (260). The data is then encoded and transmitted to a number of remote attendee systems (331) via a network. The programmable computers (260) are further configured to receive incoming data from the remote attendee systems (331) via the network, and in response, output audio via a speaker, and interact with the console programmable computer (260). A number of in-class programmable systems are each programmed to execute an educational exercise, and each come with a display and an input device for operation by the in-class participants (320). Out-of-class programmable systems (331) are programmed to execute the educational exercise and to be operated by a remote attendee system (331) via the network. Also included are a number of breakout programmable computer systems each having a breakout display, a breakout camera, a breakout microphone, a breakout speaker, and a breakout input device. Each breakout programmable computer is programmed to provide a virtual whiteboard on the breakout display for modifying a diagram in response to the breakout input device. Image data is received from the breakout camera and audio data from the breakout microphone and encoded into outgoing breakout data. This data is then transmitted to a subset of the remote attendee systems (331) via the network. Any modifications to the diagram made in response to the breakout input device are transmitted to the subset of the plurality of remote attendee systems (331). Encoded audio data from a remote attendee system (331) included in the subset of the plurality of remote attendee systems (331) is received and output via the breakout speaker. The one or more programmable computers (260) communicate with the remote attendee systems (331) only through a connection server which is configured to broadcast data received from the programmable computers (260) to the remote attendee systems (331).
