The method involves determining an operating condition of a compressed air user e.g. compressed air brake, and determining pressure prevailing in a compressed air system at respective time points. A characteristic value is determined under consideration of the determined pressure and the operating condition of the compressed air user, and the characteristic value is compared with a reference value. The pressure and the characteristic value determining steps are executed only when the compressed air user is in a condition in which the user does not use the compressed air with the intact system.
