PURPOSE: A composition containing an extract and a fraction of Colocasia antiquorum var. esculenta for preventing or treating depression is provided to enhance stability and to be used as a material for health foods or pharmaceutical products. CONSTITUTION: A composition for preventing and treating depression contains an extract and a fraction of Colocasia antiquorum var. esculenta as active ingredients. The extract and the fraction are extracted using water, alcohol, or an alcohol solution. The alcohol is selected among methanol, ethanol, propanol, and butanol. The concentration of the alcohol is 0-100%, preferably 80%.
