An image forming apparatus 108 for forming an image based on image data, comprising a photosensitive member (201, Fig.2), exposure means (203, Fig.2) for performing a first exposure and a second exposure of the photosensitive member, determination means 103 for determining a type of image to be formed, and control means 103. The control means controls the exposure means to perform the first and second exposure such that a difference in an exposure amount between the first exposure and the second exposure when the determination means determines that the type of the image is a character is greater than a difference in an exposure amount between the first exposure and the second exposure when the determination means determines that the type of the image is a picture. The determination means determines the type of image to be formed from the PDL (Page Description Language). The control means may also determine an exposure count N, where N is an integer not less than 2, and control the exposure means to perform the exposure N times depending on whether the type of image is a picture or a character. |
