The hard ceramic piece (2) has a pentagonal cross-section extending at right angles to the tire length direction. A studded tire (1) which can be fitted via pre-formed holes in the tread (11) of an existing tire includes a number of tread blocks (10) arranged one after the other in the peripheral direction. The studded tire casing (5) comprises a base flange (4) and a waist part (5), the latter having a maximum diameter (Dm) which is less than the tire length (Ls). The base flange forms an inner end (Ei) extending into the tread block and the waist part forms an outer end (Eo) protruding from the tread block, the waist part being tapered towards the flange. An elongated piece made from hard ceramic material is secured to the casing and extends into the waist part from the outer end of the casing. The length direction of this piece extends parallel to the tire length direction and the diameter (D1) of this piece is less than the maximum diameter of the waist part. The hard ceramic piece has a pentagonal cross-section extending at right angles to the tire length direction.
