A gradient index liquid crystal optical element according to this embodiment includes a first substrate, a second substrate, a liquid crystal layer, a plurality of first electrodes, a plurality of second electrodes, and a third electrode. The first and second substrates transmit light. The liquid crystal layer is filled between the first and second substrates. Each of the plurality of first electrodes is formed on that side of the first substrate, which faces liquid crystal layer, and extends along a first direction. Each of the plurality of second electrodes is formed on the first substrate and extends along the first direction. A plurality of third electrodes are formed on that side of the second substrate, which faces the liquid crystal layer. A dielectric material layer for electrically insulating the first and second electrodes is formed, the third electrode is formed to extend along a second direction, and sets of the first and second electrodes are repetitively arranged along the second direction. |
