Polymers and copolymers of acrylonitrile are spun into fibres by a process wherein the polymeric material in a particle size of from 10 to 100m is added slowly at a predetermined rate with kneading or stirring to a solvent, such as dimethyl formamide, butyrolactone, or formyl pyrrolidone, maintained at 0 DEG -20 DEG C. and under a pressure which is reduced to a degree insufficient to cause the solvent to boil, e.g. 20 m.m. Hg, the stirring and kneading being continued for a total period of at least 2 hours, while maintaining the temperature and pressure, until a homogeneous dispersion is produced which is directly thereafter heated to a temperature not exceeding 100 DEG C. to convert it into a solution, which is immediately subjected to a continuous spinning process. Specification 594,999 is referred to. |
