PURPOSE: A railway vehicle position detection system and a method thereof reduce installation costs and maintenance costs by accurately detecting the position of a railway vehicle using a cheap camera and a ground indicator. CONSTITUTION: An onboard device (100) includes a camera (110) which is installed on the body of a railway vehicle and obtains images. The onboard device includes an image processing unit which checks and calculates the absolute position of the railway vehicle from the images obtained by the camera. A ground device is installed at regular intervals on the ground around tracks. The ground device includes an indicator including ground absolute position information.
