The method involves switching to a direct mode of communication by a wrecked vehicle by using a direct mode GSM technology or a Wi-Fi technology when the vehicle loses cellular network coverage (3.5), and performing a direct mode connection to a relay vehicle within the radio range of the wrecked vehicle (3.7). An emergency message is transmitted from the wrecked vehicle to the relay vehicle, and the emergency message is transmitted by the relay vehicle to a call center when coverage of cellular communication network is found.
