The purpose of the present invention is to provide a honeycomb structure whereby soot and other particulates are not leaked externally at or above a regulated value, even when the honeycomb structure is used at a temperature above 800°C, and particularly when used at a temperature of at least 1,200°C. This honeycomb structure has a plurality of silicon carbide honeycomb sintered bodies bundled via an adhesive layer and having a plurality of cells partitioned by cell walls and arranged in the longitudinal direction, one end section of the cell walls that partition the cells being sealed. The honeycomb structure is characterized by: an oxide layer including silicon being formed on the surface of the silicon carbide particles configuring the honeycomb sintered bodies; and the adhesive layer including at least an alumina fiber and an inorganic balloon.
