The method involves determining opening of a pressure relief valve (160) based on evaluation of time course of a variable dependent on temperature of fuel entering a low pressure region (130) of a fuel supply device (100), where the valve fluidically connects a high pressure region (120) with the low pressure region when pressure of the fuel in the high pressure region exceeds a tripping pressure value. The temperature of the fuel is a variable dependent on temperature of the fuel in low pressure lines, a fuel return-flow pipe (161) or a pressure regulating valve (110).
