PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new means attenuating a virus by the less number of passage times than those of conventional methods. SOLUTION: This method for producing an attenuated virus comprises a process of culturing a cell line infected with the virus and then performing the subculture of the infected cells without performing the reinoculation of the virus to the non-virus-infected cells. By using a non-sensitive cell line to which the virus does not show CPE (cytopathic effect) originally, and by subculturing the virus-infected cell itself, the virus can be maintained without performing the operations of virus collection and re-inoculation. By repeating such the subculture, it is possible to attenuate the virus by the less number of passage times than those of the method of attenuation by the conventional methods of subculturing.
