In a downlink ack/nack message (300) of an EGPRS communication system, the length of an extension field (325) containing link quality measurements is indicated by a length field (330) comprising a range of values divided into a first and second range, the one range being used for indicating extension field lengths lying beyond a limit of the extension field length and the other range being used for indicating extension field lying below said limit of the extension field lenth.
