The method involves calculating a matrix image (13) corresponding to an original matrix image (10) with low resolution, where depth of field in the matrix image is similar to that of the original matrix image. Another matrix image (18) is calculated corresponding to the original matrix image with low resolution, where depth of field in the latter matrix image is greater than that of the original matrix image. A depth from defocus (DFD)-type three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction algorithm is implemented from the matrix images such that a depth map is output. An independent claim is also included for a device for calculating a depth map from an original matrix image.
