Abstract - 593785 Disclosed is the use of an ionic liquid as a solvent, wherein said ionic liquid comprises an anion, and a cation of the formula N+HRR'R''; in which R is a hydrocarbyl group which is alkyl substituted with one or more hydroxy substituents, the hydroxyalkyl group having 1,2, 3, 4, 5 or 6 carbon atoms; and R' and R'' is each a hydrocarbyl group which is alkyl optionally substituted with one or more hydroxy substituents; the anion is selected from carboxylates, alkylcarboxylates, bis(trifluoromethylsuphonyl)imide, carbonate, chloride, hydrogen carbonate, sulphate, hydrogen sulphate, silicate, methanesulphonate, trifluoromethanesulphonate, hexafluorophosphate and tetrafluoroborate. Representative ionic liquids include compounds such as dimethylethanolamine hydrochloride (2-dimethylaminoethanol hydrochloride), 2-dimethylaminoethanol acetate (also known as DMAE acetate / DMEA acetate), N,N-dimethylethanolammonium octanoate, dimethylethanolamine salicylate, 2-dimethylaminoethanol acid fumarate, N-butyldiethanolammonium formate, dimethylethanolamine glycolate, butyldiethanolamine bis(trifluoromethylsuphonyl)imide, dimethylethanolamine citrate, 2-dimethylaminoethanol succinate, dimethylethanolamine oxalate and 2-dimethylaminoethanol tartrate. Also disclosed is the use as defined above for enzyme catalysed reactions, as a solvent for an organic synthesis or as a solvent for extraction or liquefaction. Further disclosed is the use as defined above, wherein the ionic liquid is prepared by a process comprising the steps of: i.) providing an organic tertiary amine; and ii.) neutralising said organic tertiary amine in (i) with an acid. |
