PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display device capable of suppressing deterioration in display quality.SOLUTION: There is provided a liquid crystal display device which comprises: a first substrate having a pixel electrode having a band-like sub-pixel electrode extending in a first direction and n pieces of band-like main pixel electrodes which are connected to the sub-pixel electrode and extend in a second direction (provided that n is a positive integer) and a first alignment film for covering the pixel electrode; a second substrate having a common electrode having a main common electrode which is in parallel to n pieces of the main pixel electrodes and extends in a second direction and a second alignment film for covering the common electrode; and a liquid crystal layer including liquid crystal molecules held between the first alignment film and the second alignment film, wherein the dielectric anisotropy &Dgr;&egr; of the liquid crystal layer satisfies the relation of &Dgr;&egr;≥-0.014×(definition)+{19.7-4(n-1)} relative to the definition (ppi) dependent on the horizontal inter-electrode distance along the first direction between the main pixel electrode and the main common electrode.
