The present invention relates to a microporous membrane comprising cellulose fibers. Cellulose fibers having diameters greater than or equal to 1 µm constitute at least 5% of the total weight of the cellulose fibers in said microporous membrane, and the microporous membrane has a tensile strength of at least 50 N∙m/g and/or a tear strength of at least 0.40 kN/m. This microporous membrane makes it possible to inexpensively provide a separator for use in an electrochemical element, said separator having excellent characteristics.
