Provided is a sealed honeycomb structure that is excellent in terms of PM capture performance, crack resistance during regeneration, and production costs. The honeycomb structure (1) has: porous partitioning walls (3) that divide a plurality of cells connecting two end surfaces; and an outer peripheral wall (4) integrally formed with the partitioning walls (3). The cells comprise partial cells (5) positioned on the outermost peripheral section of the honeycomb structure (1) and partially in contact with the outer peripheral wall (4), and normal cells (6) being cells other than the partial cells (5). The normal cells (6) are in a sealed pattern whereby the two end surfaces of the honeycomb structure (1) form a complementary checker board pattern, and sealed sections (8) are formed on one end section thereof. Of the partial cells (5) that should have a sealed section formed on one end section thereof in order to follow the sealed pattern, partial cells (5a) having a surface area ratio found using formula (1) of less than 80% do not have a sealed section formed on at least part thereof, and at least 95% of partial cells (5b) having a surface area ratio of at least 80% as found using formula (1) have a sealed section (8) formed thereon, out of all partial cells having a surface area ratio of at least 80% and a sealed section on one end section thereof in order to follow said sealed pattern.
