The invention relates to a particularly efficient method which at the same time ensures a high level of operational reliability and a high shunting quality, for controlling a shunting sorting system (10). For this purpose, the method proceeds according to the invention in such a way that at least one setpoint time travel curve (210, 211) is determined for a sequence in the form of a descending wagon or a descending wagon group, measured values are acquired, at least one actual time travel curve (212, 213) is determined from the acquired measured values, and the sorting system is controlled taking into account a comparison of the acquired at least one actual time travel curve (212, 213) with the at least one setpoint time travel curve (210, 211).
