An auto-focusing device comprises: a lens drive section (113) that drives an autofocusing lens (111) in the optic axis direction; a lens position detection section (150) that detects the position of the auto-focusing lens in the optic axis direction; a region detection section (150) that detects a prescribed region of the image of an object in image data; an evaluation value calculation section (150) that calculates an AF evaluation value from the image data; a movement determination section (150) that determines whether an object that is being imaged is approaching or receding, based on whether the prescribed region detected by the region detection section is increasing or decreasing in size with respect to the prescribed region that was previously detected; and a lens control section (150) that controls the lens drive section. The lens control section (150) controls the direction of movement of the auto-focusing lens and its speed of movement, in accordance with the result of the determination by the movement determination section, the AF evaluation value and the result of position detection of the auto-focusing lens.
