METHOD AND ENCODER FOR DETERMINING TRANSFORM UNIT SIZE

PURPOSE: A transform unit (TU) size determination method and an encoding device thereof are provided to quickly determine the optimal size of a TU, thereby reducing encoding time for video data in all the devices using an encoder. CONSTITUTION: A discrete cosine transform (DCT) conversion part (310) performs DCT conversion for a TU at the current depth. A non-zero DCT coefficient calculation part (320) calculates the number of non-zero DCT coefficients from generated DCT coefficients. If the calculated number of non-zero coefficients is smaller than a predetermined threshold value, a determination part (340) skips determination about TUs at lower depths and determines the size of the TU at the current depth as an optimal TU size.
