PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reading device capable of reducing power consumption, and moving an exposure device accurately to a position to be arranged at the time of reading in a first reading method with a simple mechanism without performing complicated control; and an image forming apparatus including the image reading device.SOLUTION: When an image reading instruction (moving document reading instruction) in a moving document reading method is input to a scanner 10, a carriage motor 57 is magnetically excited by a control unit 50 and a carriage 20 is moved toward a position P. The carriage 20 stops at the position P, provided that the control unit 50 determines that the carriage 20 has reached the position P.
