In a cluster of traffic management systems (121-124), one of which multicasts that it is to be taken offline, each client request (102-105) over established connections to servers (131-138) is processed by a single traffic manager according to traffic rules (eg. SYN flag set) for load balancing, and dropped if the request does not form part of an already established connection between a client and a server (201, fig. 2). A traffic manager with active connections enters a drain state in which it completes its existing processing but does not accept any new handshake requests, and goes offline only when doing so will not interrupt an established connection. |
