<PICT:0652720/III/1> <PICT:0652720/III/2> <PICT:0652720/III/3> An area of a motor car body is coated with paint by progressively applying the paint in a helical band on the body surface by moving the body lengthwise past a paint projecting zone and simultaneously rotating the body about a horizontal, longitudinal axis, the distance of the area of contact of paint at any part of the helical band from the projecting zone being maintained constant and the volume of paint being projected being related to the speed of the area passing the projection zone, and preventing the application of paint when parts not to be painted pass the projection zone. Referring to the drawings, spray booth 1 comprises rail 2 carrying pairs of wheels 6 with stirrups 7 and depending parts 8 connected to beam 9 carrying flexible means 11 and 16 connected to shaft 10 on which car body A is fixed. Toothed wheels 14 and 15 carry chain 16 while wheel 14 is keyed on shaft 17 with bevel 18 gearing with bevel 19 and pinion 20 which is engaged by intermittent rack 22 which moves beam and car along the booth and also rotates the car body. This body as it passes along the booth receives paint from sprays 38 on arms 39 which are maintained by ram 45 of similar contour to the car body, at a constant distance from the area of contact of the paint with the part of the car body opposite the gun. Cam 49 also of similar contour to the car body maintains the axis of the gun 38 normal to the car body. The volume of paint projected from gun 38 is controlled by valve 50 actuated by cam 51 rotated in synchronism with car body 1 and having an actuating contour corresponding to the varying radii in the Schial band. Instead of spraying the paint may be flowed on when the nozzles may be mounted in fixed positions and fed through a valve controlled as before.
