It was an object to provide new materials which, upon their use even in water, efficiently release carbon monoxide in the simplest possible manner and without any troublesome secondary effect. According to the invention, the CO-emitting substance is embedded into a polymer, for example in accordance with scheme 1. These materials are used in particular as CO donor and/or CO source in biology, medicine, cosmetics and pharmacy.
