[Classes 82(ii) and 86] A froth flotation apparatus includes an impeller rotating in a pulp tank, the impeller comprising two superposed discs 30, 31, the lower, 30 being provided with a set of vanes 30x adjacent its periphery for drawing pulp into the impeller and with a set of pumping vanes 30y for discharging pulp from within the impeller across the periphery of the disc, and the upper 31 being of annular form with a series of slicing arms 31y extending across the open central portion of the disc and having a forward cutting surface for deflecting pulp downwardly through such central portion from the discharge end of a conduit F positioned over the discs. Gas, under pressure, is fed down the hollow shaft 21. on which the impeller is mounted and passes through radial ports 33 into the space between the discs. The arms 31y are preferably of rhomboid section. Reagent is fed through the pipe 28 to the conduit F, the bifurcated end of which is adjustable in position relative to the impeller by means of the rod 26, and which communicates, in the first cell with the feed conduit 17, and in other cells with an overflow Compartment 49 having an adjustable weir 45 and inlet 50 from the preceding cell. Froth discharges over the lip 19, such discharge being accelerated-by a rotary skimmer 20. Nipples 55, 56, normally closed, are provided for cleaning and baffles 60 confine the agitation to the lower part of the pulp body. In a modification, Fig. 7, a recirculation unit R is provided, comprising a housing 65 fitting between the bifurcated ends of the conduit F and connected to branch pipes 66 terminating in cages 67, adjustable by ring member 68. In further modifications, gas under pressure may be introduced beneath or adjacent the periphery of the impeller, reagent may be fed to the compartments 49, the conduits 66 may be flexible, the ports 33 may be arranged to discharge parallel to the vanes 30y or the vanes 30y may be grooved. |
