PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical element capable of reducing applied voltage used when reversibly varying orientation of planar particles, as much as possible.SOLUTION: A planar colloidal particle material 6 having one side length of about 1-10 μm, a thickness of 1 μm or less and anisotropy is included in pure water 5 filled between a pair of conductive films 4. Voltage is preferably applied to the pair of conductive films 4 only when the planar colloidal particle material 6 is changed into an erecting orientation state to the conductive films 4. Thereby, the voltage is applied to a short space between the pair of conductive films 4 to be lowered when the planar colloidal particle material 6 is changed into a vertical orientation state. Meanwhile, voltage application itself is unnecessary by using characteristics of the planar colloidal particle material 6 when the planar colloidal particle material 6 is changed into a parallel orientation state. |
