The present invention provides a novel optical element that uses a composite material and has a desired refractive index distribution. This optical element comprises a resin and a group of inorganic particles dispersed in said resin, wherein: said group of inorganic particles includes a group of first particles, and a group of second particles having a greater particle diameter than said group of first particles; in a region on the side of the optical axis of the optical element, there are more of said first particles than said second particles; and in a region on the outer peripheral side of the optical element, there are more of said second particles than said first particles.
