The method involves determining (S1) the target-total braking force of the motor vehicle by a computing device and adjusting the current-total braking force of the motor vehicle to the target-total braking force. A stability criterion is determined (S4) by the computing device. The brake force on one of the wheels of a rear axle is varied (S6) by the computing device on fulfillment of the stability criterion. The brake force at the wheel of the rear axle and at one of the wheels of the front axle is varied (S7) by the computing device in case of non-fulfillment of the stability criterion.
