The method involves determining temperature of a storage cartridge at various moments in a time interval (51). An amount of reducing agent transferred per unit time to the cartridge at each moment is determined (52) based on the determined temperature. The amount of reducing agent transferred at the time interval to the cartridge is determined (53) by integration of the amounts of reducing agent transferred per unit time. An amount of ammonia present in an auxiliary cartridge is determined (54) by adding an amount of ammonia present initially and an amount of ammonia absorbed during reloading.
