The position measuring device (1) has a processing unit (2) that is connected with data channel (3) through which the data is transferred. The position measuring unit is connected to processing unit through wire pairs (31-34). A detection unit (4) associated with position measuring unit is provided for detecting the presence or absence of wire pair (33,34), when the position measuring unit is connected to processing unit through data channel.
