A high throughput screening device may comprise high-transmittance wells, electrodes disposed in the wells, and optical detection means. The device may be configured to apply an electric field in the wells to alter the transmembrane potential of cells disposed in the wells and produce detectable light emissions corresponding to ion channel activity.
