The invention essentially relates to a starting device comprising: a motor vehicle heat engine starter (1) including a drive member (13) capable of a translational movement from a rest position to an active position in which the drive member cooperates with a drive element of the engine, and a contact switch (23) which can move the drive member (13), characterized in that the starter device further comprises a sensor (46) for measuring displacements of the starter (1) or of a part of the surroundings of the starter (1), and a control unit (44) able to command the translational displacement of the drive member (13) on the basis of the measurements returned by the displacement measurement sensor (46).
