The filter device has a housing (1) for receiving a filter cartridge (10), where the housing has a flue gas outlet and a prechamber (20) with a flue gas inlet. The housing and the prechamber stay in connection with each other through a passage (25). A dust separator is provided in the area of the passage. The housing has a bypass (8), which is connected with the flue gas outlet in parallel to the filter cartridge. The filter cartridge has a cylindrically arranged filter fabric, knitted fabric or non-woven fabric made of temperature-resistant plastic. An independent claim is included for a method for operating a filter device.
