[Class 100 (i)] Sheet register mechanism comprises a sheet impelling member and a driving component operated intermittently in step with the sheet feed to impart to the impelling member both an impelling movement and a movement into sheet-engaging position. Sheets are fed over a feed board and over a plate 21 in a recess therein and are gripped between an impelling roller 2 and an idle roller 6 and moved transversely against a side lay 5. The roller 2 is driven from an intermittently rotated shaft 14 through skew gears 13, 12 and gears 10, 9, 8, the gear 10 being mounted on a spindle 4 on which a U-member 3 carrying the spindle 7 of the roller 2 is mounted. The gear 9 is mounted on a spindle 9<SP>1</SP> which also carries a cam 15 co-operating with a follower 16, whereby rotation of the gear 10 drives the roller 2 while also lowering it into sheet-engaging position. The cam and follower are kept in contact by an adjustable spring 15<SP>1</SP> which regulates the maximum pressure of the rollers against a sheet, which is also controlled by a counterspring 17. A guide shoe 22 for the sheets is pivoted at 24 and raised by the spindle 7 to allow entry of a sheet, its lowermost position being controlled by an abutment 27 on a member 28 pivoted at 29 and adjusted by a screw 30 with which it is kept in contact by a torsion spring 32. A smoother plate for sheets fed into the apparatus is provided, pivoted on the frame 11 supporting the spindle 4. The frame is adjustable transversely of the feed along the shaft 14 and a tube to which it is releasably clamped, and is adjustable longitudinally by adjusting the latter tube. Instead of the roller 6 a plate mounted for free sliding movement on rollers and located in an opening in the feedboard may be used, and may be spring-actuated for return movement or mechanically returned by a connection with the U-member 3. |
